 2017 Preview 


       G.W. Long completed the 2016 season with a 12-1 record. The Rebels cruised through the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record going into the post season. Last year G.W. Long captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. G.W. Long made a nice playoff run in 2016, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Aliceville team by the score of 28-21.

       The high-scoring G.W. Long offense ranked 25th in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.5 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Rebels have gone 24-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, G.W. Long has gone a combined 69-15. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, G.W. Long has managed to compile a record of 166-121. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 2A and 102nd in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2010.

       The Rebels are led by head coach Scott Horne who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 74-20 over the past eight seasons at G.W. Long. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won five region crowns with Coach Horne.

       Coach Horne's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 74-20 (78.7%).

       The Rebels are hoping to make another deep run into the playoffs this year. They have three consecutive undefeated regular seasons but have yet to get past the seimfinals in the playoffs.

       The G.W. Long Rebels will play in Class 2A region two during the 2017 season.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, G.W. Long has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Rebels should be considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Rebels are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Rebels have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

       The Rebels open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Dale County on Thursday, August 31 at Rebel Stadium. Last year the Dale County Warriors finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 4A region two. The Warriors lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to UMS-Wright by a score of 36-0.

       G.W. Long and Dale County have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 7-7-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2016 with G.W. Long winning by a score of 54-14.
